The case definition of COVID-19 Corona Virus has changed. There are currently 5 confirmed cases in NZ and several people in isolation. If you are severely ill regardless of travel history (criteria 3) ring for an ambulance on 111. If you fit in category 1 or 2, ring the corona virus number on  0800 358 5453

Case definition of COVID-19 infection (7 March 2020)

A suspected case satisfies both the epidemiological and the clinical criteria for each of the following three scenarios (ie, in the same row):

  Clinical criteria   Epidemiological criteria
1 Fever or history of fever (≥38°C) and acute respiratory infection with at least one of the following symptoms: shortness of breath, cough or sore throat. AND Travel to or from (excluding airport transit) countries or areas of concern within 14 days before onset of illness  
  OR    
2 Any acute respiratory illness AND Close contact1 with a suspect, probable or confirmed case of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the 14 days before onset of illness
  OR    
3 Severe acute respiratory illness (fever and at least one sign/symptom of respiratory disease e.g., cough, shortness of breath) AND requiring hospitalisation AND with no other aetiology that fully explains the clinical presentation AND No source of exposure has been identified(ie, regardless of travel history)

1 ‘Close contact’ is defined as any person with the following exposure to the case during the case’s infectious period, without appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE):

  • direct contact with the case, their body fluids or their laboratory specimens
  • presence in the same room in a health care setting when an aerosol-generating procedure is undertaken on the case
  • living in the same household or household-like setting (eg, shared section of a hostel)
  • having spent a prolonged period (eg two hours or longer) in the same close indoor environment (such as a classroom, workplace, gatherings, general practice or ED waiting room)
  • having been seated in the same row or 2 rows in front or behind the case on any conveyance
  • having been face-to-face (within one metre of the case) for more than 15 minutes in any setting.
