Meningococcal W strain has been on the increase causing meningitis worldwide recently. In New Zealand there has been about 100 cases nationwide with some higher rates, in Northland.
Main Meningitis Serotypes in New Zealand
Serotype B accounts for two thirds of cases
Serotype W recent increase accounting for 25% of meningitis. This type has been increasing in other parts of the world including Africa, parts of Europe and Australia. Mainly affects infants, young children, adolescents and young adults, but W this year 40% was seen in over 40 years of age.

What Vaccine should I have?
You can have both vaccines at Eastmed Doctors and is recommended. Menactra is funded for a narrow group of patients with long term medical problems.
Both vaccines are recommended but not funded for the following groups:
- Infants and young children aged under 5 years, adolescents and young children.
- Adolescents and young adults living in close proximity to each other ( boarding schools, university halls of residence)
- Travelers to high risk countries and hajj pilgrims.
- Lab workers exposed to meningococcal disease.
